Instead of playing with complicated conversion programs, with too many settings, try Mac DVDRipper Pro: it's simple, elegant, and there's even a free demo.
Here are the instructions for converting a DVD to M4V:
Download Mac DVDRipper Pro from our site. Try the free demo or purchase the full version - either one will work.
When Mac DVDRipper Pro has finished downloading, find the MDRP zip file in your Downloads folder. Double-click on it.
The uncompressed app should now appear: Mac DVDRipper Pro - aka MDRP. Launch MDRP by double-clicking on it.
Your computer might remind you this is "an application downloaded from the internet". That's cool. click Open.
Now take out the DVD you want to rip to M4V. Insert it into your computer. If the movie automatically starts playing, just press the ESC key.
Go back to the MDRP window, which now shows the DVD's title.
Click on the "Destination:" button to specify where the ripped M4V file should be saved. For example: Desktop.
Click the pull-down menu that reads "All videos, menus and bonuses". Choose "Rip and convert". This configuration will rip the DVD's main movie as an M4V file.
Click the "Rip" button, at the bottom of the MDRP window.
Now Mac DVDRipper Pro will do its stuff. The progress bar keeps you updated as the program rips the DVD movie and converts it to M4V.
When the conversion is finished, the M4V file will be waiting on your Desktop or wherever you specified in Step 7. Enjoy!
